Steven Hawken

Dr. Steven Hawken (PhD) is a Senior Scientist at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, an Associate Professor in the School of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Ottawa, Adjunct Scientist at Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) and Affiliate Investigator at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute. He holds a MSc in Applied Statistics from the University of Guelph and a PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Ottawa. Dr. Hawken has over 20 years of experience working in the fields of epidemiology, biostatistics and most recently in data science, artificial intelligence and machine learning in health research. He has published approximately 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts. For the past several years, Dr. Hawken has served as co-leader and lead biostatistician for a global preterm birth research program supported by over $2M in funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, where he has been applying advanced machine learning and artificial intelligence approaches to modeling and risk prediction for preterm birth and related adverse health outcomes.
